NATIVE SPEAKER PROGRAMS Native Speaker programs consist of entire classrooms of students who have a strong educational background in Spanish. Spanish has been the vehicle of instruction for all academic subjects for their entire elementary career. Some come from Spanish-speaking countries, where they attended school, while others have participated in a strong Spanish Dual Language/Immersion program. Goals of the Program • Integrates language and culture. • Builds on native-level abilities in Spanish. • Broadens students’ understanding of deeper aspects of culture. Benefits of the Program As an articulation of dual language programs as students advance to middle and high school, the main goal for Native Speaker programs is to continue to develop their literacy skills and learn academic knowledge at a high level in Spanish. Needs of Students in Native Speaker Programs • Advanced literacy and language arts in Spanish “at grade level” • Reading and interpreting nonfiction texts • Examining their own cultural identity • Comprehending authors and famous Spanish works in their historical contexts • Academic content instruction in Spanish at the highest levels
