The Challenge
Fernando Botero. La familia presidencial
Works by Colombian artist Fernando Botero
(b. 1932) are easily identifiable; the people
and objects depicted are disproportionately
large. These exaggerated figures, which some
call
boterismo
, show people in daily life, as well
as historical characters and events. Botero
often paints figures of power and authority, but
the irony and criticism in his work are most
often shown with good humor. Botero’s style
eliminates brushwork and texture to obtain
a smooth look as in
La familia presidencial
,
where characters all seem to have an inflated
sense of importance.
Personajes de Mafalda
Mafalda is the main character of an Argentinean
comic strip that ran from 1964 to 1973. It
became popular in many countries, generating
two animated cartoons and a movie. Mafalda
is an unusually perceptive 6-year-old girl
who is concerned about humanity and world
peace. Her reflections often echoed existing
political and social issues. The comic strip
also introduces readers to Mafalda’s parents,
siblings, and friends, including one very little
friend called Libertad (Freedom), suggesting the
cartoonist’s interpretation of the little freedom
there is in society.

Warm-Up/ Independent Starter
■■
Have students look at the photos, and ask them
to come up with a “story” for one of the images.
Students who are familiar with the cartoon strip,
Botero’s art, or
la Llorona
may include some
of this information; others must rely on their
imagination. Have students write their stories.
Preparation
■■
Ask students to read the captions and predict
the topic for each challenge. For example, they
may answer that the first image is a cartoon; the
second is about paintings, portraits, or politics;
and the last image deals with legends.
■■
Have students read each
Desafío’s
objective, as
well as the vocabulary and grammar goals, then
discuss how each illustration might relate to these
objectives and goals.
Teaching Suggestions
¿Cómo eres?
The Unit

The theme for Unit 1 is personal
relationships. The participants will learn how
these relationships are expressed as they
describe people’s physical characteristics and
personality traits, family relationships, and
the cycle of life.
■■
Andy and Tess, two veterans of
Fans del
español
, will give the participants their tasks.
Desafío 1.
Michelle and Daniel have to find

some famous works of art by Hispanic
painters and then create an audio guide for
their school’s art department webpage.
Desafío 3.
