Multiple Intelligences:
Musical-Rhythmic Intelligence

Ask students to come up with a freestyle rap
to help them remember the family vocabulary
from this unit. It doesn’t necessarily have to
rhyme, but it has to make sense. Ask one
student to start a beat and another student
to start the freestyle. Have other students
add to the freestyle. Make sure to record this
freestyle session to replay at a later date.
HERITAGE LANGUAGE LEARNERS

Have students look at the three family
paintings from the beginning of the
Desafío
.
Ask them to imagine what the conversation
between the family members was like prior
to posing for the portrait. Tell students to
look carefully at the facial expressions of the
people in the paintings to help them get an
idea of what kind of person he or she was
and the family dynamics at the time their
portrait was painted. Encourage students
to be creative as they come up with their
dialogues. Ask volunteers to present their
dialogues to the class.

To extend this activity, ask pairs of students
to rehearse a brief soap opera scene in which
two of their main characters interact with each
other. Then ask students to role-play their
scene in front of the class. You may want to
hold a class vote to choose the best script and
the best actors.

Ask students why they think the family
shown from 1950 is not smiling and seems
so serious. Students could offer realistic
explanations, or they might make up a little
story about the lives of these family members.

Have students correct the false statements
in order to make them true. Then call on
volunteers to read their corrected statements
aloud.
