TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE (TPR)
•
Divide the class into two teams and play
“Charades” with the sentences from
activity 5. Agree on how many rounds to
play before beginning the game. Without
speaking, team members will take turns
acting out the missing part of each sentence
in activity 5 (i.e., what they were doing
when something else happened). They
will tell which one of the six sentences
they are pantomiming and the other team
members must guess the missing part of
the sentence.
HERITAGE LANGUAGE LEARNERS

Ask students to look through an online
newspaper from their country of origin. Have
them choose a short piece of news that
interests them. If there is no access to the
Internet in the classroom, you may want to
assign this part of the activity as homework
the day before.
•
Once students have chosen a news article,
ask them to identify all of the preterite and
imperfect verb forms they find in the text.
Then have them analyze the sentences
where these verbs are used and explain why
each tense was used.

Convert this activity into an interview. Have
students think of two additional questions
they would like to ask their partner. Then
have them pair up with another student and
interview each other. They should take notes of
the answers. After the interview, students will
write a paragraph summarizing their partner’s
responses.
