TWO-WAY DUAL LANGUAGE IMMERSION Two-Way Dual Language programs, also known as Two-Way Immersion (TWI) , consist of classrooms of students with an English-speaking background and students with a Spanish-speaking background, usually with half of the class representing each language background. Goals of the Program Needs of Students in TWO-WAY Dual Language Programs Benefits of the Program Like all dual language programs, the main goal of Two-Way Immersion (TWI) programs is for students to acquire language proficiency and academic success in English and Spanish (or other target language) through content and culture. Language proficiency: At the end of elementary school, students will be able to listen, speak, read, write in both Spanish and English. Academic acheivement: In addition to their language abilities, students will be able to show mastery in all academic content subject areas (Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies) in both languages. Depending on the program model, this can also include Art, Music, and/or other subjects. • Listening and speaking in Spanish (English background students only) • Literacy and Language Arts in Spanish and English • Content subject area instruction in Spanish and English
