SANTILLANA USA - Galeria 1 Recursos Modulo 2
G1 4 Manual del docente Welcome to Santillana’s Galería de lengua y cultura! Our newest work is the first Spanish-as-a-heritage-language series for grades 9-12 in the Unites States. The series’ objectives include • promoting critical thinking skills in both Spanish and English. • reinforcing and enriching Spanish as a world language, native language, or heritage language. • promoting bilingualism and biculturalism through the practice and mastery of academic language • practicing listening, reading, speaking, and writing competencies within the cultural and social framework of all regions in the Spanish-speaking world. • acquiring and practicing vocabulary and language structures from social studies, science, art, and music content areas. Each of the eight modules in this text presents a theme and a specific region. The phases in each module have a specific focus, such as reading, literary genres, content areas, academic vocabulary, and language specific to social studies, science, art, and music. Culminating with a general review and self-assessment, each module invites students to travel on an educational and cultural adventure which will prepare them to be bilingual, cultured, and educated citizens of the United States and the world. Book 1 covers the following Spanish-speaking regions: the Caribbean, North America, northern Central America, southern Central America, northern South America, central South America, southern South America, and Spain. You and your students will visit a total of 21 Spanish-speaking countries: Cuba, Puerto Rico, and the Dominican Republic (the Caribbean); Mexico and the United States (North America); Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras (northern Central America) and Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama (southern Central America); Colombia, Venezuela, and Ecuador (northern South America); Peru, Bolivia, and Paraguay (central South America); Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay (southern South America), and Spain. Each of the eight modules has a main theme. The main themes and subtopics in Book 1 are the following: What is a Heritage Language? Students who have a heritage language are those who speak a language other than English at home. For many, English is their dominant language, but they still use the heritage language to communicate with family members. Heritage Spanish speakers can communicate orally with greater ease than their classmates learning Spanish for the first time. Nevertheless, some heritage speakers cannot write or use academic or more complex language at the same level of proficiency as they can speak the language. To take them out of this fixed state or to widen and enrich their knowledge, this program includes activities suitable for heritage speakers as well as students from diverse ethnic backgrounds. + Introducción / Introduction
