SANTILLANA USA - Galeria Whitepaper

biliterate skills by including activities that involve speaking, listening, reading, and writing complete texts in real situations as recommended by the World Spanish Language Development Standards. (WIDA, 2014). Galería de lengua y cultura provides meaningful activities based on the Backward Design Model (Wiggins & McTigue, 1998; see also Bowen, 2017). Each module opener of Galería de lengua y cultura identifies the desired learning goals by presenting the big idea and the essential questions of the module. These goals are achieved through learning activities and instructional strategies such as: • Large and/or whole group discussion • Interactive lecturing: segments of direct instruction combined with interactive segments in which students use a variety of strategies such as translanguaging and other language-production techniques • Think-pair-share: think or write about an answer to a question, share responses with a peer, follow up with instructor explanation • Cooperative learning • Role-play • Informal and formal assessments that allow students to demonstrate evidence of understanding, learning, and growth Among the types of activities used by Galería de lengua y cultura for informal assessment are: • Practice activities • Short-response questions • Homework assignments • Research projects • Interactive lecturing • Think-pair-shares, etc. Depending upon their age, education, and developmental levels, heritage speakers have a wide range of competencies in their primary language (Ruz Gonzalez & Ciriz-Houtchens, 2014). Effective programs address this wide range of competencies, and the Galería de lengua y cultura program uses a variety of ways to differentiate instruction, including the use of multiple access strategies that target different proficiency levels. In Galería de lengua y cultura , the activities in Levels I, II, and III provide access strategies that allow students to engage in the concepts, content, and critical thinking skills, using the same material in different ways. For further differentiation, Galería de lengua y cultura offers two additional booklets: Artículos y actividades , with a focus on the Spanish Language and Culture Advanced Placement Exam®, and Destrezas básicas in Book 1 for students who may have limited or interrupted formal education. Destrezas básicas provides students with the basic language concepts from the Student Edition presented in the context of informational readings on Social Studies and Science. Book 2 includes a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) booklet called Destrezas integradas . This booklet is not intended for advanced students or for use in a magnet program. Rather, it is a means to practice the language skills presented in the Student Edition, to develop academic and domain-specific vocabulary, and to demonstrate comprehension of those subjects through reading and writing activities, including a research paper. The section called “Galería de arte y música” in each module teaches art and music history, artistic tendencies, and musical genres that exist in the Spanish-speaking world. This section presents information and activities that are historically and linguistically relevant and that help students develop both academic and domain-specific language and vocabulary. The activities provide deeper knowledge and command of the students’ cultural heritage and serve as extension and enrichment material,
