students that this question asks about the
author’s purpose, or why the author wrote
the story. This purpose could be simply to
tell a story, but it could also be to teach a
lesson or communicate a message.

Have students work in pairs, one student
role-playing Raúl and the other role-playing a
news reporter. Have the reporter ask Raúl five
questions, each containing one of the following
key words:
breakfast, valuable, fuel, machine,
teammates.
Tell students that each of Raúl’s
responses should also include the key word
used in the question. When students have
asked and answered five questions, have them
switch roles and conduct a second interview in
the same way.
Narrator 1:
It was the top of the ninth.
Narrator 2:
Raúl hit to second base to bring the winning
run home.
Narrator 1:
His teammates huddled together in celebration.
Teammate 2:
Wow, you were really on fire today, Raúl!
Narrator 2:
Raúl smiled. He knew why he had played
so well.
Raúl:
I guess I had enough fuel today!
