Introduce the Theme

fluency
Tell students that they will be learning about
healthy habits in this unit. Read the unit title
aloud with students. Ask:
What does it mean to
be healthy?
(Elicit that to be healthy is to take
care of yourself.)
What are some healthy habits?
(eating well, exercising, brushing your teeth,
staying clean, and so on) Explain that healthy
habits add up to a healthy lifestyle, or way of
living. Point out the unit objectives included on
the Student Book page, and discuss them with
the class. You may also use objects in your
classroom that contribute to the introduction
of the theme, along with photo cards that
supplement the eliciting of theme-related
vocabulary.

Assess students’ language levels related to the
theme by pointing to the photo on this page.
Ask:
What is the family in this photo doing?
(They are getting ready to eat dinner.)
What
healthy foods do you see?
(corn, meat) Use the
Health
photo cards that show food to elicit
additional healthy foods. Then, ask:
Why are
healthy foods part of a healthy lifestyle?
(They
keep you well. They make you strong and give
you energy.)
Introduce exercise as another part of a healthy
lifestyle. Point to the picture on Student Book
page 11. Ask:
How does this boy exercise?
(He
plays baseball.) Ask students to brainstorm
other forms of exercise. Use
Health
photo
cards that show sports and exercise to
supplement students’ answers.
