Vocabulario – Biografías
EXPANDING LEARNERS
•
Ask students to go on the Internet and to
look for pictures of Esmeralda Santiago. On
most search engines, you can find an option
for “Images.” There are many photos of the
author from her childhood to adulthood. Have
students describe Santiago at each stage in
her life and explain what they believe she
was doing or going through at the time of the
picture. For example:
En esta foto, Esmeralda
era una adolescente. Creo que estaba en
Puerto Rico. Seguramente iba a la escuela y le
gustaba escribir.
DEVELOPING LEARNERS

Have students read Esmeralda Santiago’s
biography in small groups. Each student
in the group reads one sentence at a time
until all the sentences have been read. Ask
students: Do you think Esmeralda Santiago’s
life and works are important? Would you like
to do some of the things she has done in her
life? What would you need to do in order to
accomplish what she has accomplished?

Ask students to list some words they might expect
to see in a biography.
Preparation

Read aloud the words in the

feature and have students repeat them after you.
Ask students which ones are easily decodable
because they are cognates.

Call on volunteers to read the highlighted words
in
Biografías
and explain what each word means.
You may want to first read the biography aloud to
model pronunciation, and then have students take
turns reading paragraphs.

To expand this activity, have students work
with a partner and come up with definitions (in
Spanish) for other words in the biography or in
the
Más vocabulario
feature.

Students can each make up their own logical
or illogical sentence and read it aloud to the
class. The other students compete against one
another and try to be the first to correctly label
the sentence and, if it is illogical, make the
necessary corrections.

Have students think of people they have read
about or known who have emigrated to another
country. Ask them to describe this person’s
experience.

Esmeralda Santiago
nació
en 1948 en San
Juan (Puerto Rico), donde pasó su
niñez
. En su
adolescencia
, a los trece años, se trasladó a
Nueva York con su madre y sus diez hermanos.
Estudió teatro y baile en la New York City’s
Performing Arts High School y
se graduó
de la
universidad de Harvard en 1976. Actualmente vive
en Nueva York con su marido, el director de cine
Frank Cantor, y tiene dos hijos.
Esmeralda escribió tres libros autobiográficos.
El primero,
Cuando era puertorriqueña
, cuenta su
infancia
en Puerto Rico. El segundo,
Casi una
mujer
, se centra en su
juventud
en Nueva York.
Y el tercero,
El amante turco
, trata sobre los años
de juventud hasta su
graduación
en Harvard.
Todos han recibido excelentes críticas y varios
premios.
Su primera novela de ficción se titula
America’s
Dream
. Fue un gran éxito y se tradujo

translated)
a seis idiomas. Trata de la vida de una
joven
puertorriqueña que sale de la isla en busca
de una vida nueva.
Esmeralda Santiago es también autora de varios
artículos, cuentos infantiles y documentales, y
colabora como voluntaria en varias asociaciones.
