Warm-Up/ Independent Starter

Have students brainstorm some famous comic
strip characters they know. How many of these
characters are children? What are the topics that
are of interest to these characters?
Preparation

Invite volunteers to share their Independent
Starters with the class. Is the class familiar with
some of these characters? Then ask for a
volunteer to read the introduction to the dialogue.
Do students know who Mafalda is?

Ask students to observe the characters
depicted on this page and mention two physical
characteristics for each one. Then have pairs
read the dialogue. Now that they have met the
characters, do they see any relationship between
the characters’ appearance and their personality?

Read aloud the comic strip at the bottom of the
page and discuss it as a class. What does the
comic strip tell us about Susanita?

After students complete the activity, have
them work with a partner and describe another
character in the comic strip without revealing
his/her name. Partners have to guess who it is.
Teaching Suggestions

EXPANDING LEARNERS
Ask students to re-read the
Mafalda
characters’ physical descriptions and choose
the one that most closely matches their own
physical description. Then have students
read the characters’ personality traits and
choose the one that is closest to their own
personality traits. Is it the same character?
Once students have chosen their character
or characters, have them get into pairs and
read the lines that best describe themselves
to their partner.
DEVELOPING LEARNERS
Before students read the text, have them
look at the pictures of the
Mafalda
characters
and brainstorm a list of the physical
characteristics and personality traits that they
remember. As they read through the dialogue,
they should make a note of any words they
already knew that are used, or any words that
seem like synonyms for words they included
in their lists.

Una argentina famosa
Michelle and Daniel will write a comic strip, but first they must familiarize themselves
with
Mafalda
, a famous comic strip from Argentina, and with other comic heroes.
Michelle: Mira, esta es Mafalda. Es una niña argentina de pelo negro.
Tiene seis años.
Daniel: Parece muy inteligente. ¿Y estos son sus amigos?
Michelle: Sí. Se llaman Libertad, Susanita, Miguelito, Manolito y Felipe.
Y el más pequeño es Guille, su hermano.
Daniel: ¿Manolito es el niño rubio y alto?
Michelle: No, ese es Felipe. Manolito es tan alto como Felipe, pero es
más gordo y tiene el pelo corto y castaño.
Daniel: Ya sé quién es. Entonces el niño pequeño y rubio es Miguelito.
¿Y Susanita?
Michelle: Es la niña rubia del pelo rizado.
Daniel: ¿Y cómo es Mafalda?
Michelle: Pues es una niña muy crítica y algo pesimista, pero es muy graciosa.
Ella está preocupada por la paz mundial, el futuro del planeta...
Daniel: ¿Y sus amigos también?
Michelle: Cada uno tiene su personalidad. Felipe es muy tímido y pesimista,
y está enamorado de una vecina. Manolito, en cambio, es muy ambicioso:
siempre piensa en el negocio familiar y en tener muchas tiendas. Y Susanita
solo piensa en casarse y tener muchos hijos. Mira, aquí tienes a Susanita.
