Mafalda
Argentina, like many other nations in Latin
America, has had a turbulent history, marked
by military coups, repression, and corruption:
ideal material for social and political
commentary. A coup d’état brought the
military to power in 1976, and from that date
until 1983 the military led what has been
called
la Guerra Sucia
(the Dirty War) against
those who opposed the regime. Because of
repression during
la Guerra Sucia
, political
and social criticism had to be kept subtle,
as in a comic strip. Popular pressure finally
restored democracy to the country in 1983.

ask students to write one sentence that each

Students can write each of these sentences
on a separate piece of paper or index card,
and trade with a partner. Can their partner
