Differentiated Instruction
EXPANDING LEARNERS
Ask students to create an activity to quiz
their classmates on the vocabulary. They
may, for instance, list the definitions of
vocabulary words and have their classmates
fill in the word. For example:
Esta persona no
tiene pelo. Es...
(
calva
). Another option would
be to create a true/false quiz. For example:
Alguien chismoso no habla mal de los demás
.
(
Falso
)
Have students proofread their quiz before
they administer it to a classmate. Then have
them take each other’s quizzes. How did they
do? Do they know the unit vocabulary well?
DEVELOPING LEARNERS
Explain to students that to make new
words a permanent part of their Spanish
vocabulary, they need to continue reviewing
beyond the point of familiarity to achieve
true mastery. Have students think about
their learning style (i.e., visual, auditory,
kinesthetic) and assist them in devising
word-learning strategies that work for them.
Visual learners will benefit from the creation
of illustrated flashcards. For students who
are auditory learners, saying the words
aloud and using a recording device to record
themselves will help them. Kinesthetic
learners will do well acting out the words.

REPASO
Presentation
■■
In this section, students will review all key

Warm-Up/ Independent Starter
■■
Give students two or three minutes to draw a
family tree of their own family—or a family they
know well—similar to the tree in activity 2. Ask
students to omit the names of the different family
members, except for two. Have students leave
blank spaces to write the rest of the names later
on. The tree should have three branches and eight
blank spaces.
Preparation
■■
Go over the
Repaso
presentation with the class.
You may want to model pronunciation for words
that cause students difficulties. Then ask
students to make a separate list of the vocabulary
words that are cognates. Remind them that
cognate words enhance their comprehension and
help them learn Spanish. Point out that there are
also some false cognates and that they should be
aware of these as well (e.g.,
comprensivo
doesn’t
mean “comprehensive”;
embarazo
doesn’t mean
“embarrassment”;
familia política
doesn’t mean
“political family”).
■■
Ask students to get together with a partner and
exchange the family trees they drew for their
Independent Starters. Have partners interview
each other to fill out the missing names and
complete the family tree. For example:
A.
¿Cómo se llama el abuelo paterno de Tom?
B.
Bill.
A.
¿Y cómo se llama la nuera de Bill?
B.
Karen.
