Unit 1
Understand the Songs
reading
comprehension
Discuss the content of the songs with students.
Then have students connect each of the songs
to a specific event in the play. Ask:
Which
characters sing the song? Why do they sing it?
Finally, ask students how the songs might help
them better understand or appreciate the play.
Vocabular y Review
oral
fluency
Review the four instrument families. Then
tell students that they are going to create
“family portraits” of the instruments. Organize
students in groups, and assign each group
one of the four families. Have students choose
instruments that belong to their assigned
family and draw personified versions of those
instruments in a setting of their choice. Each
student may want to draw one family member
and then paste it onto a separately created
background. Remind students to label their
portrait with the instrument family name. Invite
students to present their completed portraits to
the class. Conclude the activity by playing the
CD track of one of the songs from this lesson.
When students hear an instrument from their
family, have them hold up their family portrait
or raise a hand.
When you
’
re feeling tired and you don
’
t know what is wrong,
Should
’
ve eaten breakfast! Should
’
ve eaten breakfast!
When your legs are failing and you don
’
t feel very strong.
Should
’
ve eaten breakfast! Should
’
ve eaten breakfast!
Remember breakfast is a very important meal,
And if you don
’
t like wheat, have some oatmeal!
When my feet feel like steel weights, and I can run no more,
Wish I ate my breakfast! Wish I ate my breakfast!
When I just can
’
t focus and I can
’
t even the score,
Wish I ate my breakfast! Wish I ate my breakfast!
Remember breakfast is like fuel for your body,
And if you don
’
t fuel up, you will be sorry!
When you
’
re feeling tired and you don
’
t know what is wrong,
Should
’
ve eaten breakfast! Should
’
ve eaten breakfast!
Always make sure you are fueled up to win!
