Food for Thought
Write a letter to Raúl. Persuade him to adopt healthy habits.
Include at least three “ingredients” of a healthy lifestyle.
Explain why each one is important.
Think about these questions:
What does Raúl already do that is healthy?
What new healthy habit does Raúl learn about?
What other people help Raúl stay healthy?

The Writing Process
Remember,
the writing process includes a series of steps:
• Developing Ideas
Use the Internet, visual elements,
or other references to help you gather and develop ideas.
• Organizing
Choose the ideas you want to use. Put them
in order, connect them, or discard the least important ones.
• Drafting
Use the ideas you organized to write paragraphs.
• Revising
Read your paragraphs again and correct your
writing, keeping in mind what you learned in this unit.
• Rewriting
Produce a clean copy of your piece, applying
all the corrections, to display in class.
Remember,
you can always repeat a step if you need to.

vocabulary
development
Write the key words
food for thought, persuade,
and
reasons
on the board. First, teach students the idiom
food for thought
, meaning “something to think about.”
Then, point to the word
persuade
. Explain that when
you persuade, you convince someone
to do or believe something. Tell students that
in this activity, they will try to persuade Raúl to
adopt healthy habits. Next, point to the word
reasons
. Explain that giving reasons also helps
persuade someone
.
Ask:
Why should I eat fruit?
When students respond, point out that they
have given reasons for this healthy habit.
Food for Thought
writing
applications
Read aloud the writing prompt and the steps of
the writing process. Tell students to complete
the activity on a separate sheet of paper. Have
students first write down their answers to the
three questions. Encourage them to include
examples and reasons. Prompt students who
need help with questions such as the following:
What other activities could could Raúl do to
get exercise? Why is breakfast important?
As
students write their drafts, remind them to
include details from their prewriting.
Vocabular y Review
oral
fluency
Organize students in pairs. Have one student
role-play Raúl before he learns the importance
of breakfast. Have the other student verbally
persuade Raúl of the value of this meal by
giving good reasons to eat breakfast.
