Warm-Up/ Independent Starter
■■
Have students read the grammar presentation
silently. Then write the following sentences on the
board and ask students to complete them:

Preparation

Review students’ Independent Starters and then
call on volunteers to explain how each verb was
used. Then have different volunteers list on the
board the rest of the uses of
ser
and
estar
not
covered by the sentences in the Independent
Starter. Work with students to come up with
sentences for each use listed on the board.
Activities

After students have completed the activity, ask
them to cite the rule for using these verbs. For
example,
están de moda
: idiomatic expression;
son muy
divertidos
: identifies a characteristic.

There are several possible descriptions. For
instance, to describe the young man, students
may say:
Está dormido / cansado / enfermo.
To extend this activity, ask pairs to come up
with two descriptions for each photo.

EXPANDING LEARNERS
•
Have students work with a partner or in
groups of three. Provide a die to each pair or
group. Tell students that they will roll the die,
which will determine whether they will work
with
ser
or
estar
. If they roll an odd number,
they must say a sentence using a form of the
verb
ser
. If they roll an even number, they will
use a form of the verb
estar
. Explain that they
must vary the uses of the verbs. Then play
the game as a class.
DEVELOPING LEARNERS
•
For students exhibiting difficulty determining
whether to use
ser
or
estar
, provide
sentences for them to complete with the
appropriate verb. As you review the answers
with students, point out the reason for using
each verb. Use these sentences to begin the
activity:
