Las tiras cómicas
The Spanish cartoon characters Zipi and
Zape are the creation of José Escobar
Saliente. These twins love soccer, and are
always getting into trouble. Spain’s Mortadelo
and Filemón, and Rompetechos are the
invention of Francisco Ibáñez, and all three
are capable of bungling anything put before
them. Rompetechos is the cartoonist’s
favorite, and in Spain this character has had
a stamp issued in his honor.

Visual-Spatial Intelligence

Have students work in pairs. Provide a photo
of a person to one partner, who then has
thirty seconds to study the photo. Collect the
photos and display all of them. Then have
the partner who studied the photo describe
the person in the photo to his or her partner.
The partner must then select the photo out of
the line-up that best fits with the description.
Then have the partners switch roles using
different photos.
HERITAGE LANGUAGE LEARNERS
•
There are several expressions used to
describe people that vary in different parts
of the Spanish-speaking world. For example,
pelo chino
is used in Mexico to describe
curly hair. Ask students to come up with a
list of the words from their region of origin to
describe someone’s physical characteristics.
Make a class list and encourage students
to use both the vocabulary words and the
regional words as they apply throughout
the chapter.
