DESAFÍO 2
EXPANDING LEARNERS
Have students choose a well-known family
from a fairy tale, television program, or
film to describe, such as Cinderella or the
Simpsons. They should include the family
relationship, personality traits, and physical
appearance in the description. Then have
students share their descriptions with
the class, leaving out the names of the
characters. Have the class guess the identity
of the family described.
DEVELOPING LEARNERS
Have students make flashcards to help them
identify the vocabulary. On one side of the
flashcard, students draw or paste a picture of
the family member, and his or her position in
the family tree. On the other side, students
write the Spanish word for the family member.
Once students have finished, have them use
their flashcards to review with other students.
The more they switch, the more students can
practice, so have students switch partners
frequently.

Warm-Up/ Independent Starter

Have students write a list of family relationships
they know from previous levels.
Preparation
■■
Ask students to use the lists from their
Independent Starters and create a family tree
showing these relationships for a girl named
Marta, her siblings, parents, two sets of
grandparents, and her parents’ brothers and
sisters and their children.

Have students read the words in the
Más
vocabulario
feature and the highlighted words in
the text. Then call on three students to each read
aloud one of the paragraphs on page 32. After
each paragraph is read aloud, call on volunteers
to define some of the family relationships.

To expand this activity, ask students to make
a family tree for José, showing not only his
family but also his in-laws.

Bring in some photos of celebrities who have
been in the news because of their recent
engagement, marriage, or divorce and ask
students to identify their
estado civil

Have students work with a partner and create a
description of family relationships modeled on
the audio. Partners will read their descriptions
to one another and then create a family tree.
