Have students write about their extended
family, including step-parents, in-laws, nieces
and nephews, and first cousins. Ask them to
describe the family members they are closest
to and explain why they are close to them.
They may also discuss family members who
live in other countries. Students may not
know these relatives personally, but they have
perhaps seen pictures or heard about them.
If there are students who feel uncomfortable
talking about their family, suggest that they
describe another family they know from their
country of origin.

Estereotipos familiares
It can be difficult to understand other cultures
or perspectives, and creating stereotypes—
whether of the interfering mother-in-law,
the cruel and unfeeling stepmother, or
the neighbor with a different religion or
accent—does away with the challenges of
understanding those who hold views, customs,
and interests that differ from ours. We can
laugh at some stereotypes in fiction and film,
but perpetuating stereotypes in our lives is
a way to keep separating “them” from “us.”

Estereotipos familiares
En la cultura hispana hay varios estereotipos familiares generalmente
alejados de la realidad. La literatura, el cine, la publicidad, los cómics
y los chistes
(jokes)
suelen presentar a la suegra como una persona autoritaria e indiscreta
(tactless)
que siempre discute con su nuera o su yerno. Tampoco las madrastras tienen
buena fama; a veces se las presenta como personas con un carácter frío y distante.
