Have students write about what they were like
in elementary school. Have them write about
their impressions of school, their activities,
their friends, people who were important in
their lives, their likes and dislikes, and what
they wanted to do when they were older. They
should also include a physical description, as
well as a description of their character.
HERITAGE LANGUAGE LEARNERS

We learn about what has shaped our present
by the experiences of others in the past. Tell
students to write three paragraphs about
the childhood experiences of an older family
member. Have students include information
about where and when this person grew up,
typical childhood activities, and any major
events that occurred during his or her
childhood. Have volunteers share their work
with the class. Ask students to compare their
childhood with this relative’s childhood. Have
students talk about what things they wish
they could do that their relative did.
