DESAFÍO 2
Gramática – El imperfecto
y el pasado continuo
EXPANDING LEARNERS
Ask students to think about the toys they
used to play with as children. Have students
describe the toy(s), the person or people they
used to play with, and in what conditions they
used to play. For example:
Cuando era niña,
jugaba con mi
Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robot™.
Siempre jugaba con mi hermana. Yo era el
azul y mi hermana era el rojo, y peleábamos
por horas...
DEVELOPING LEARNERS
Ask students to make an imperfect tense
conjugation table for the following verbs:
estar, ir,
and
jugar
. Then have them write
three sentences about their childhood
experiences using each verb. For example:
E
star
yo estaba
nosotros(as) estábamos
tú estabas
vosotros(as) estabais
usted
él       estaba
ella
ustedes
ellos       estaban
ellas
Cuando estaba en el tercer grado...

Warm-Up/ Independent Starter
■■
Ask students to think of three things they used to
do when they were young children.
Preparation
■■
Go over the grammar presentation. Remind
students that the use of the imperfect to talk
about actions that happened repeatedly in the
past is often expressed by “used to” in English.
■■
Ask for volunteers to share their Independent
Starters. You may want to write some of their
sentences on the board and circle the verb in
the imperfect. Be sure to point out the regularity
of the imperfect tense endings and the fact that
there are only three verbs that are irregular.
■■
Remind students that the past progressive is
used much more often in English than in Spanish,
when often the simple imperfect suffices.
Activities
44.
Ask students to identify the verbs in the
preterite and explain why this tense was used.
(
Tuve, pude, llamó, dio, vino, dijo, fuimos, se
puso, llegó, salí,
llegué.
These verbs describe
actions that were completed in the past.)
45.
Have students work in small groups and
compare answers. Have each group designate
a spokesperson who will make a report to the
class summarizing the group’s responses.

Gramática
El imperfecto y el pasado continuo
El imperfecto
Use the imperfect tense to talk about actions that happened repeatedly in the past.
De niña
jugaba
mucho con mis hermanos.
The imperfect is very regular (see conjugation on page R14):
-ar
verbs Add the endings
-aba
,
-abas
-er
and
-ir
verbs Add the endings
-ía
,
-ías
There are only three irregular verbs in the imperfect tense:
Ser
Ver
Ir
era
éramos
eras
erais
era
eran
veía
veíamos
veías
veíais
veía
veían
iba
íbamos
ibas
ibais
iba
iban
El pasado continuo
Use the past progressive to talk about ongoing actions in the past.
The past
progressive is formed with the verb
estar
conjugated in the imperfect, plus the
present participle (
gerundio
):
—¿Qué
estabas haciendo
cuando te llamé?
Estaba dibujando
el árbol genealógico de nuestra familia.
Remember: regular verbs form the present participle with the endings
-ando
(
hablando
)
and
-iendo
(
comiendo
,
escribiendo
).

Compara.
¿Cómo se forma el pasado continuo en inglés?
¿Tiene los mismos usos que en español?
