EXPANDING LEARNERS
•
Frida Kahlo lived a very interesting life. Ask
students to come up with ten interview
questions they would ask Frida if she were
still living. Then have students exchange
papers and research the answers to their
classmates’ questions on the Internet.
Once students have found some or most
of the answers, have them pretend to be
an interviewer and Frida Kahlo. The original
author asks the questions and the researcher
answers the questions. Record the interviews
if possible, so students can critique their
Spanish.
DEVELOPING LEARNERS

Before students begin reading the text, build
on prior knowledge by tapping into what
they already know about Frida Kahlo. Show
students some of Frida’s self-portraits (you
will find them online) and ask them if she
looks familiar. Then ask students questions
about things they probably know, such as
¿De qué país es Frida? ¿Cómo fue la vida de
Frida: fácil o difícil? ¿Todavía está viva Frida
o ya murió?
Ask students to help each other
answer your questions. Invite students to add
other information they know about Frida.

Have students read the

silently. Ask them to scan the biography and write
all the nouns and verbs they can find that have to
do with the family or family relationships.
Preparation

Call on volunteers to explain the difference
between
biografía

autobiografía
and between
retrato
and
autorretrato
. Which of these two do
students think reflects a person’s life story better:

biografía
or an
autobiografía
? How do they think
a person is best represented, by a
retrato
painted
by someone else or by their own
autorretrato
?

Read the biography aloud to students to model
pronunciation and intonation. Then have students
alternate reading several lines or a paragraph. You
may want to pause after every paragraph and call
on a volunteer to paraphrase the content.

Ask students to take out the lists of nouns and
verbs they wrote in their Independent Starters.
Now have them read

and add to their lists. Review these words with
students.

Ask students to cite the uses of the imperfect

Una breve biografía
Frida Kahlo
es una de las pintoras más famosas de México.
Nació en 1907. Su padre era de origen alemán, y su madre
era mexicana, de origen español y amerindio

se casó dos veces. Su primera esposa murió al dar a luz

Con su segunda esposa tuvo cuatro hijas, y Frida Kahlo
fue la tercera de ellas.
Frida pasó su infancia entre mujeres, con su madre, sus
hermanas y sus dos hermanastras. Tuvo una vida muy
difícil. A los seis años tuvo polio, una enfermedad
muy común entonces. En su adolescencia, estaba viajando
en un autobús cuando este chocó

con un tranvía

. Sufrió
heridas

terribles en las piernas y la espalda, y nunca
pudo tener hijos.
Mientras se recuperaba

, Frida empezó a pintar. Luego
conoció a Diego Rivera, el famoso muralista mexicano, y se
casaron en 1929. Los dos artistas se divorciaron en 1939,
pero volvieron a casarse en 1940.
Frida pintó muchos autorretratos. En ellos refleja aspectos
de su vida, sus obsesiones y sus sueños

, mezclados con
elementos de la mitología mexicana.
Frida Kahlo murió a los 47 años. Sus cuadros se hicieron
famosos mucho tiempo después. La casa donde vivió es hoy
un museo; está en Coyoacán (Ciudad de México) y se llama
la Casa Azul.
