Differentiated Instruction
EXPANDING LEARNERS
•
A century from now, people will look back
on our times and write about our lives. Tell
students to pretend it is the year 2112, and
write a presentation about what was going
on in what is now our present time. Tell them
to talk about the clothing, schools, family
dynamics, sports, and anything else they
think will be significant knowledge a century
from now. Once students have finished, have
them share their presentation with the class.
DEVELOPING LEARNERS
•
Have students make a timeline of their life
so far. Ask them to think of major events in
their life, such as when they met their best
friend, started playing a sport they still play,
memorable trips they took, or anything else
they feel is significant. You may choose to
limit the number of events on the timeline
to ten. Then have students write a sentence
that accompanies each event on the timeline.
Finally, have them write a summary paragraph
of their life so far. Encourage students to use
time marker phrases, such as

Warm-Up/ Independent Starter

Ask students to think about a romantic
relationship that exists between some of their
friends, family, or celebrities. Ask them to write
a brief paragraph explaining who the couple is,
and where and how they met. If their relationship
ended in marriage, ask students to give the place
and date of their union.
Preparation

Go over the grammar topics from this
Desafío
and
review the vocabulary related to the cycle of life.
Clarify any doubts students may have regarding
the use of the preterite and imperfect tenses to
narrate an event or tell a story.

Have students take out their paragraphs from the
Independent Starter, add more details, make sure
they have used both the preterite and imperfect
correctly, and write a final draft. Call on students
to read their paragraphs aloud. Make corrections
and suggestions as needed, and ask the class
comprehension questions at the end of each
narrative.
Activities

After students have role-played their interviews
for the class, take a class vote on the best
interview. Criteria should include the most
interesting and/or penetrating questions, the
most original and/or insightful answers, and
the most convincing acting while conducting the
interview and answering the questions.
