La población latinoamericana
MAPA CULTURAL
CRITICAL THINKING
Explain that some Latinos are puzzled by
the demand for racial self-identification on
nearly every application form they have to fill
out in the United States. They sometimes
feel that they don’t really fit in any of those
ethnic categories. Why might this be? Ask
students to think of possible reasons for
most countries in Latin America not to record
ethnicity. Why might Latin Americans prefer
to identify themselves in terms of their
national origin rather than ethnic ancestry?
Hold a class discussion to talk about these
questions.
HERITAGE LANGUAGE LEARNERS
Ask students to research the history of
the population of their heritage country. In
addition to using reputable online and library
sources, encourage them to interview family
members as well as other people they know
from their country of origin.
Encourage creativity in the presentation
of the information to the class. Students
may, for instance, assemble a collection
of pictures that showcases their country’s
population and let the pictures do the
talking. If time allows, facilitate a question-
and-answer session after each presentation.
Preparation
■■
Invite students to share their Independent Starters.
You may want to create a transparency of the map
on this page and add arrows for the different
migrations of people to the United States. Remind
students of the Native American nations for
whom America was already home when the first
Europeans arrived, as well as the African slaves
who were forcibly brought from Africa, and include
these groups in your map. Ask students to take
notes during this discussion, since they will need
this information for the first part of activity 89.
■■
Explain that the population of Latin America is
the result of similar migrations and intermingling
of people from different ethnic and cultural
backgrounds. Then go over the
Mapa cultural
as
a class.
Activities
89.
For the second part of this activity, ask
students to prepare a five-question true/false
quiz based on the information they researched.
As students present their information, ask the
class to take notes. Then, at the end of all the
presentations, distribute students’ quizzes and
see if the class is able to answer the questions
correctly. If time allows, you may want to hold
a class vote to select the most informative
presentation.

Sociedades multiculturales y multirraciales
Habla
con tu compañero(a) sobre las similitudes y diferencias entre la
población latinoamericana y la estadounidense. Creen un diagrama de Venn
y preséntenlo a la clase.
Investiga
uno de los siguientes temas y comparte la información con tus
compañeros(as).
1.
La comida chifa de Perú.
2.
El género musical bomba, de Puerto Rico.
3.
Los indígenas mapuches de Chile.
4.
Los menonitas mexicanos.
Algunos chinos y
japoneses
emigraron a Perú.

cerca del 5% de

Fisonomía
latinoamericana
El mestizaje está patente
tanto en la cultura como en las
características físicas de la población
latinoamericana.
Podemos encontrar rasgos asiáticos
en algunos habitantes de Perú,
personas afroamericanas con ojos
claros en los países caribeños o gente
rubia y con ojos azules en muchos
países de Latinoamérica.
Los africanos llegaron a
América como esclavos en
la época colonial. Esta
población se extendió
desde las Antillas hacia
Centroamérica y
Suramérica.
La cultura africana tuvo
gran influencia en los
ritmos musicales latinos.
La presencia europea en el
continente americano empezó
con la llegada de los españoles
en 1492. Durante siglos se
establecieron en América
muchos colonos procedentes
de España. Y durante los
siglos XIX y XX muchos
europeos cruzaron el Atlántico
en busca de una vida mejor.
