vocabulary
development
Read the directions for activity A aloud, and
model the first item. Check that students
understand the task they are to complete.
Have students complete the activity by writing
their answers on a separate sheet of paper or
by discussing the items with a partner. When
students have finished, review the answers as
a class. Next, read the directions for activity B.
Draw a baseball diamond on the board, and
divide it into quarters as in the diagram on the
Student Book page. Read the first item (Hit 1)
aloud, and shade the quarter of the diamond
between homeplate and first base. Ask:
How
much of the area has Raúl run around?
Repeat
the process with the remaining items. Have
students write their answers on a sheet of
paper, and then discuss the answers as a class.

Explain that after the baseball game, Raúl is
hungry for lunch. Give each student an index
card with one of the following words written
on one side:
whole, half, quarter.
Ask students
to draw on the other side of the card a healthy
lunch food and then color the fraction of
the item indicated on their card. Then have
each student hold up his or her picture while
the other students identify the food and the
fraction (for example,
one half of a sandwich
).
