This session explores the basic principles of foreign

language teaching as they apply to the teaching

of Spanish in the elementary classroom and to the

learning processes that are associated with second

language acquisition, communicative competency,

and cultural competency. Participants discuss

effective techniques for assessing and evaluating

students and learn about resources available to

enhance teaching and learning Spanish at the

elementary level.

for Elementary and Secondary Spanish Teachers)

This session addresses common grammatical issues

secondary Spanish heritage learners encounter

and strategies to help address them. Participants

benefit from a review and clarification of basic and

advanced grammatical and linguistic concepts,

including the teaching and learning of spelling

and punctuation, verb conjugations, common

grammatical and linguistic inaccuracies, and

common errors of heritage speakers living in the U.S.

(e.g. Spanish/English false cognates, accent rules,

language variation, etc.).

The session provides teachers of heritage Spanish

speakers with research-based instructional strategies

proven effective when teaching heritage Spanish

speakers. Participants learn about the influence

of culture on teaching and learning: cross-cultural

learning on cultural identity, the transcultural

experience, cultural competency and mediation,

and cross-cultural communication. The session

also explores six categories of language learning

strategies: cognitive, metacognitive, memory-related,

compensatory, affective, and social (Oxford, 2001).

Participants will learn effective instructional

strategies to develop student competence in the

Interpersonal, Interpretive and Presentational modes

of communication as set out in the World-Readiness

Standards for Learning Languages (ACTFL, 2015). The

session will include suggestions for selecting

materials, designing effective activities, and

managing the new demands of the communicative

classroom.
