of sounds that are made by combining two consonants. Explain that sometimes

two consonants together make a sound that is different from the sounds made

by either of the letters on their own. For example, the /sh/ sound in

shine

is very different than the /s/ and /h/ sounds in

sun

and

how

. Then, explain

that sometimes the consonants do retain their original sounds when they are

combined with another consonant as the /g/ and /r / sounds in the word

grow

.

Draw a two-column chart on the board. Title the left column “Keep” and the

right column “New.” Say a word that begins with a pair of consonants, and repeat

it a few times, enunciating the initial sounds as clearly as possible. Ask students

to identify whether the letters keep their sounds or take on a new sound. Then,

write the words in the appropriate column. Have students copy the chart into

their notebooks.
