Ask four students to line up by height in
front of the class. Ask volunteers to make
comparisons based on their height. Then
have the students rearrange themselves by
age. Ask volunteers to make comparisons
based on their age. Then have students
rearrange themselves based on the color of
the shirt they are wearing, from lightest to
darkest. Ask volunteers to make comparisons
based on their shirt color. Finally, have
students rearrange themselves by their
athletic ability. Ask volunteers to make
comparisons based on their athletic ability.
HERITAGE LANGUAGE LEARNERS
•
Ask students to use celebrities from their
culture of origin to make comparisons
and use superlatives. Have students find
pictures of two men, two women, and two
child stars to make comparisons and use
superlatives. Have them put the pictures on
a sheet of paper and write the comparisons
and superlatives between the pictures. Have
students share their work with the class.

Ask students to work with a partner and have
each one make up additional questions that
the partner must answer using comparisons.
Tell students that the comparisons do not
need to be limited to classmates, but can
include newsmakers and even characters from
literature, film, or music.

To extend this activity, have students draw
two figures that may be of people, animals,
or things. There should be obvious differences
between the two. Based on their drawings, ask
students to write a brief description, comparing
the figures. Call on volunteers to share their
drawings and descriptions with the class.
