EXPANDING LEARNERS
Have students use the word
hace
to describe
their morning routine today. Tell students
to provide a detailed account of how they
spent their morning from the time they woke
up until the time they reached this class.
Have volunteers share their routines with
the class. Then have students compare their
routine with that of a partner. For example:
1.
Hace tres horas que me levanté. No me
duché porque me duché por la noche, hace
once horas...
2.
Fernando y yo nos levantamos hace tres
horas y...
DEVELOPING LEARNERS
Provide students with the following sentence
starters:
Ayer…, Cuando era joven…,
Anoche…, A menudo…, Siempre…, El
verano pasado…
and have them complete
the sentences about themselves or family
members. Have students share their
sentences with the class. Remind them
to consider whether they are talking about
a habitual action or a specific, completed
action in the past. If students continue to
exhibit difficulty with choosing the correct
tense, review the time expressions and
discuss how they do or do not refer to
specific moments in time.

Warm-Up/ Independent Starter
■■
Have students read the grammar presentation
silently. Then ask them to think of other time
expressions they know and make a list of these
words.
Preparation
■■
Ask students to share their Independent Starters
with the class and help them to categorize each
time expression with the corresponding tense.
Call on two students to compose a class list,
showing time expressions used with the preterite
and other expressions used with the imperfect.
Display this master list in the classroom.
Encourage students to refer to this list as they
work on the activities on pages 48–49.
Activities
75.
Ask students to compare and contrast their
partner’s responses with theirs. For example:
Pedro vio una película ayer con unos amigos,
pero yo fui al cine la semana pasada con mi
hermana.
76.
To extend this activity, ask students to write
three or four sentences based on the model,
exchange papers with a partner, and have them
write a related question and answer, again
following the model.
77.
Ask students to explain why they chose each of
the verb tenses.
