ALCALINGUA AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ALCALÁ
Alcalingua is an independent entity of the University of Alcalá charged with organizing and teaching Spanish language
and culture courses to Spanish teachers worldwide. This includes the development and creation of educational materials
for teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language and Spanish as a Second Language.
THE UNIVERSITY
The University of Alcalá is one of the oldest university in Europe and was founded by Cardinal Cisneros in 1499 on the
site of the Alcalá General School of Study founded in 1293. Today, the University of Alcalá is situated about eighteen
miles from Madrid, has 26,000 students, and three different campuses. The University of Alcalá is an advisory member
of the Cervantes Institute and is renowned for its annual presentation of the prestigious Cervantes Prize. UNESCO has
recognized the University of Alcalá as a World Heritage Site for its historical importance and its role in the spread of
Spanish language and culture.
